The PMs poised to thrive in this new epoch will be the ones who transcend mere execution and process optimization. They'll be big-picture visionaries and discovery catalysts — masterful innovators capable of spotting opportunities that even the most advanced AI models cannot fathom.
I want to tell you something that most PM educators won’t say directly: a large portion of what product managers do today can already be automated.
Not theoretically. Right now. Tools exist that write PRDs, generate user stories, synthesize customer feedback from thousands of support tickets, prioritize backlogs using weighted scoring models, and produce competitive analysis reports in minutes. The tasks that consumed a junior PM’s first two years — the documentation, the reporting, the requirement gathering, the Jira grooming — AI does those faster and with fewer errors.
This is what I call the Product Singularity: the point at which AI’s capability in execution-level PM work converges with (and then exceeds) the average practitioner. It is not a distant event. It is already happening in Bengaluru and Gurugram product rooms, even if nobody is announcing it in town halls.
The question is not whether this disruption is coming. The question is what you do with the next 3-5 years.
What AI has already absorbed
Let’s be specific. Vague claims about “AI will change everything” are useless. Here is what is already being automated or is actively in flight:
Documentation and requirements gathering. AI can transcribe user interviews, extract themes, generate JTBD statements, and draft PRDs from a brief conversation. What a PM used to spend three days doing now takes two hours — and the AI’s first draft is usually cleaner than most junior PMs produce.
Data interpretation and basic analytics. Anomaly detection, cohort analysis, funnel visualization, metric drop diagnosis — all of this is being wrapped into AI-native analytics tools. You still need to ask the right question. You no longer need to write the SQL or build the dashboard.
Competitive research. Scraping product changelogs, app store reviews, pricing pages, and social mentions to generate competitive summaries is exactly the kind of structured, repeatable task that AI excels at.
Roadmap prioritization mechanics. RICE scores, weighted scoring matrices, opportunity sizing — the arithmetic of prioritization is trivially automatable. The judgment about what matters is not.
Status updates and stakeholder communication. AI can draft your weekly product update from a Jira board faster than you can. This is not a future capability. It exists today.
What does this mean for the average PM? It means that if your primary value is in execution hygiene — writing clear requirements, maintaining process, keeping things organized — you are one AI-powered layer away from being redundant.
This is not doomsday. It is clarification. The question AI is forcing is: what do you actually bring to the table that a well-prompted model cannot?
The tasks AI cannot do (yet)
Before we go further, honesty requires precision. There are real limits.
Judgment under ambiguity. AI can generate ten options. It cannot tell you which one is right when the data is thin, the stakeholders are split, and the market signal is unclear. That call requires someone with enough context, credibility, and accountability to make it and live with it. That person is still human.
Customer empathy that goes beyond pattern matching. AI can identify that 40% of support tickets mention “confusing onboarding.” A PM who has watched ten users struggle through your onboarding — seeing the face that scrunches at step 3, the moment they close the app in frustration — that PM knows something the ticket summary doesn’t capture. Direct exposure to user pain is not replaceable by synthesis.
Organizational navigation. Getting a feature shipped at a large Indian enterprise requires more than a good spec. It requires knowing who the real decision-maker is (often not the person in the room), which business unit has the political capital, and how to sequence conversations so that the right people feel heard before the decision is made. AI has no map for this.
Strategic bets on non-obvious markets. Every playbook written about India’s B2B SaaS boom in 2016 would have said the TAM was too small and enterprise sales cycles too slow. The people who built in that market anyway were right not because of better data — the data said no — but because of a judgment call about how Indian companies would evolve. AI is trained on what happened. Bets on what has not happened yet are still human territory.
Taste and aesthetic coherence. Product quality in 2025 is partly about whether something feels right — whether the interaction rhythm, the information hierarchy, the emotional arc of an onboarding flow creates a coherent experience. AI can generate many options. Choosing the right one, and knowing why it is right, is still judgment.
The great leveling
In 2022, there were over 20,000 PM job openings in India. Average PM salaries commanded a 246% premium over India’s mean pay scale. The demand curve was steep and the supply was lagging. That combination rewarded even mediocre PMs.
That era is ending.
AI is collapsing the value of process expertise — the ability to run a good sprint, write clean tickets, maintain a structured roadmap. These skills had a premium when they were scarce. They are no longer scarce. Any PM with access to the right tools can produce structured, documented, process-correct work.
What does not collapse in value: the ability to find problems worth solving, the judgment to make the right call when data is incomplete, the trust and credibility to move an organization, and the imagination to see a category before the data confirms it.
India’s PM ecosystem has a specific version of this challenge. A large portion of the PM workforce was built during the SaaS and startup boom — recruited for their ability to bridge engineering and business, run agile processes, and document features. These are exactly the skills being absorbed by AI first. The PMs who will thrive are the ones who have been building judgment, not just process.
A product team weekly sync at a B2B SaaS company in Bangalore. Five people around a table — Head of Product, two PMs, an engineering lead, and a designer. The Head of Product has just demoed an AI tool that generates sprint-ready user stories from a product brief in under a minute.
Nisha (Head of Product): “So the question on the table is straightforward. This tool generates user stories that are — honestly — better than what most of us write. Acceptance criteria included. Edge cases flagged. Should we stop writing user stories manually?”
Arjun (PM): “I mean, yes? If the output is good, why would I spend four hours a week on something a machine does in four minutes?”
Sneha (PM): “Because writing the story is not the point. The point is the thinking that happens while you write it. When I write acceptance criteria, I am forced to consider what happens when the user does something unexpected. The AI does not know our users. It knows patterns from a training set.”
Ravi (Engineering Lead): “I have read the AI-generated stories. They are structurally clean. But they miss context that Sneha's stories have — like knowing that our enterprise clients use the bulk upload in a way that is completely different from what the feature was designed for. That knowledge is not in any document. It is in Sneha's head because she watched them use it.”
Arjun: “So we use the AI to generate the first draft and then add our context on top. That still saves three hours a week.”
Nisha: “That is the obvious answer. But I want to push harder. If the AI handles the artifact — the story, the spec, the acceptance criteria — what do we do with the three hours we get back? Because if the answer is 'attend more meetings,' we have learned nothing.”
The room goes quiet. This is the real question. Not whether AI can replace the task, but what the team does with the time it frees. The answer to that question determines whether AI makes the PM role more valuable or less.
Sneha: “I would spend it with customers. I talk to maybe two a month right now. It should be two a week. That is where the context comes from that the AI cannot generate.”
Nisha: “Now we are getting somewhere.”
The team agrees AI can handle the artifact. The real debate is whether the artifact was ever the valuable part of the PM's work — or whether it was a proxy for thinking that now needs to happen somewhere else.
Three scenarios for the next five years
How this plays out depends on two variables: how fast AI capability grows, and how quickly organizations actually redesign PM roles around it. These are not the same timeline.
Scenario A: The augmented PM. AI handles the execution layer. PMs become primarily discovery and judgment roles — spending 70% of their time on user research, strategy, and organizational alignment, with AI producing the artifacts. Headcount stays roughly the same but the profile changes dramatically. This requires organizations to actually restructure roles, which most move slowly to do.
Scenario B: The shrinking middle. AI absorbs execution-layer PM work. Organizations discover they need fewer PMs at the IC level and more at the senior level (where judgment is the value). Entry-level PM roles thin out significantly — which creates a pipeline problem for developing senior PMs in the future. India’s large pool of junior PMs faces the most immediate pressure in this scenario.
Scenario C: The capability explosion. AI multiplies what a single PM can deliver so dramatically that the same team ships 5x more. Organizations that understand this expand product investment rather than reduce headcount — but the PMs who benefit are the ones who know how to direct AI effectively, not the ones who are waiting for direction themselves.
None of these is inevitable. Most organizations will muddle into some combination of all three. But knowing which scenario is most likely in your specific organization is strategically important. A PM at a 2000-person Indian enterprise with slow adoption of AI tools faces a very different 5-year window than a PM at a 50-person product startup that has already replaced Jira grooming with AI-generated sprint prep.
Write down the five things you spend the most time on in a typical week. For each, answer:
- Can AI do this today, with the right prompts and context?
- If yes, what is the judgment or relationship layer that still requires a human?
- If you stripped out everything AI could do, what is left that is genuinely yours?
Most PMs find that 40-60% of their week is in category 1. That is not a threat — it is time that could be redirected toward work in category 3. The question is whether you will redirect it proactively or wait until a reorg forces it.
The metaskills that survive
The skills that AI cannot replicate are not random. They cluster into a set of human capabilities that have always separated great PMs from competent ones — but were obscured by the volume of execution work that kept everyone busy.
Contextual judgment. The ability to synthesize weak signals, incomplete data, and competing stakeholder views into a decision. Not a process for making decisions — judgment. This develops through reps: making calls, being wrong, figuring out why, adjusting. It cannot be prompted.
User empathy as discovery, not empathy as performance. There is a version of empathy that is a soft skill checkbox — nodding in customer interviews, writing “our users want…” in PRDs. That version is easy to fake and not particularly valuable. The version that matters is the ability to notice what users do not say: the hesitation before answering, the workaround they built without thinking, the feature they use in a way you never intended. This requires extended exposure to real users, not AI-synthesized summaries of their feedback.
Strategic pattern recognition across industries. The PMs who saw the fintech opportunity in India in 2015 were not running better analytical models — they were drawing on broader context: demonetization, JAM trinity, the demographic profile of first-time smartphone users. This kind of synthesis across economic, social, and technological trends is not AI’s strong suit. Training on historical data makes AI excellent at identifying patterns that have already occurred. Spotting the emerging one requires a different kind of attention.
Organizational trust and influence. This is the most underrated PM skill and the one most immune to AI. Getting a product shipped in a large organization is a political act — it requires building a coalition of people who believe in what you are building and are willing to spend their own credibility on it. AI cannot build trust. It cannot read the room in a leadership meeting. It cannot have the conversation with the skeptical engineering lead that turns opposition into buy-in. PMs who are good at this will become more valuable as AI handles the work that used to provide cover for those who were not.
What this means if you are starting out
If you are just entering product management in India — through a bootcamp, an APM program, or a lateral move from engineering or consulting — the playbook from 2018 is not your playbook.
The 2018 playbook said: learn the frameworks, get good at documentation, prove you can run a sprint. That was correct when process competence was scarce. It is not correct now.
The 2025 playbook is: get as close to users as you can, as fast as you can. Develop opinions about strategy. Learn to use AI tools as leverage (not as a crutch). Build your judgment through reps, not theory. Find the hardest product problems you can work on and work on them.
The PMs who will be well-positioned in 2030 are not the ones who mastered Jira in 2025. They are the ones who spent 2025 developing judgment about hard problems, deep relationships with users, and a track record of being right about things that were not obvious.
That is a harder path than learning a framework. It is also more defensible.
